About The Artist

John Shaw is a fine art photographer based in Lincoln, Nebraska, whose work explores landscape, architecture, and the quiet character of place. While rooted in Nebraska, his photography extends across diverse regions of the United States, bringing a consistent focus on light, form, and atmosphere to each environment he encounters.
Working in both black and white and color, John is drawn to contrast, form, and the interplay of light and shadow. His black and white work emphasizes structure and timelessness, while his color photography reflects the subtle tones and atmosphere of the landscapes he encounters. Across both, his images often focus on the relationship between land and story—whether in the rolling isolation of the Sandhills, the rugged terrain of the Pine Ridge Escarpment, or the enduring presence of Nebraska’s State Capitol.
A lifelong musician, John’s background in violin and guitar continues to shape the way he approaches photography. He is particularly attuned to rhythm, balance, and composition—seeing scenes in much the same way one might experience music, where timing, structure, and subtle variations create meaning.
John’s process is entirely hands-on from beginning to end. Each photograph is carefully captured, processed, printed, matted, and prepared by him personally, ensuring complete control over the final presentation. This approach reflects not only a commitment to craftsmanship, but also a belief that the finished print should carry the same intention and care as the moment it was created.
His work has been exhibited at the Nebraska State Capitol and the League of Nebraska Municipalities, and is carried in select Nebraska, regional, and national retailers as well as through his website. His photography has also been featured in interviews and coverage by the Lincoln Journal Star, Omaha World-Herald, and Nebraska Public Media.
In addition to his fine art work, John has completed photographic work for business and community organizations in Oceanside, California, Sedona, Arizona, and surrounding areas, expanding his perspective while maintaining a consistent artistic approach.
He is also the author of Cameron the Capitol Cat: A Portrait in Light, Stone, and Fur, a photographic study that blends imagery and narrative to document one of Nebraska’s most recognizable and beloved figures.
John’s work is guided by a quiet attention to light, form, and the character of a place. Whether in open country, architectural spaces, or more distant regions, he seeks to create photographs that feel both grounded and lasting images that hold a sense of presence and invite a closer, more thoughtful way of seeing.
